Josie Anne Luevano’s life was cut short due to hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), a condition that tragically went undiagnosed and untreated, depriving her of the blood transfusions she needed to survive. On June 21st we are honoring Josie’s life and raising awareness about HDFN for her first heavenly birthday with our first ever Allo Hope Foundation Blood Drive. Blood donation is a lifeline for those affected by HDFN. It represents far more than an act of kindness, it represents life and hope for families like Josie’s.

Why Blood Donation is Crucial for Alloimmunization and HDFN:
Some pregnant mothers develop antibodies after being exposed to a blood type that is different from their own, a condition called maternal red cell alloimmunization. The mother’s antibodies can attack her baby’s blood during pregnancy, leading to a condition called hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Babies affected by HDFN can become anemic and require multiple blood transfusions both in utero and after birth. Some babies with severe disease may need intrauterine blood transfusions as early as 15 weeks gestation. Without these blood transfusions they face severe anemia and eventually death and it is estimated that 160,000 babies die annually from HDFN. Awareness is key to a baby’s survival.
The Urgent Need for Blood Donors:
The American Red Cross recently declared an emergency blood shortage, with the lowest number of donors in 20 years. This shortage can lead to delayed treatments and transfusions, which can be fatal for babies with HDFN. Blood donors are needed now more than ever.
