Learn to loosen up and trust your instincts with alla prima painting — a direct, expressive approach to oil painting where the entire piece is completed in one session, while the paint is still wet. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll work from life or photo reference to create a finished still life painting in oils. You’ll explore key techniques for working quickly and confidently with color, value, and brushwork. The focus is on strong shapes, expressive edges, and capturing the essence of your subject without overworking — a refreshing shift for painters who want to break free from tight rendering.
You’ll Learn How To:
- Build a composition with strong shapes and value relationships
- Mix clean, vibrant color directly on the palette or canvas
- Use bold brushwork and confident mark‑making
- Work wet‑into‑wet and manage paint consistency
- Finish a painting in a single sitting
This workshop is a great introduction for painters new to oil or anyone looking to paint more freely and intuitively. Expect a fun, supportive atmosphere where experimentation is encouraged.

Our courses are typically held in the lower level of Arlene's. Because access to the lower level is available only by stair, please let us know if using the stairs presents any difficulty for you in advance of the class so we can make alternate arrangements.
