Johann Sebastian Bach
Mass in A Major, BWV 234
George Frideric Handel
Nisi Dominus, HWV 238
Dixit Dominus, HWV 232
While the Mass in B Minor is among J.S. Bach’s best-remembered legacies, it’s not his only work in the Mass genre. He also wrote four shorter masses, each setting only two of the Ordinary texts: Kyrie and Gloria. Bach’s Mass in A Major offers an impressive range of vocal and instrumental color, covering the gamut of expression in 30 minutes! We’ll also hear brilliant music for the service of Vespers—Nisi Dominus and the virtuosic Dixit Dominus—composed by the 22-year-old G.F. Handel while he was living in Italy. These works show the youthful composer as a fiery master of the Italian style, eager to make his mark on the musical scene in Rome.
Amy Nicole Broadbent, soprano
Crossley Danielle Hawn, soprano
Clare McNamara, alto
Brian Giebler, tenor
Paul Max Tipton, bass
Shannon & Jim Davis and Anonymous Donor, underwriters
