About this Event
"Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of transforming by-products, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products perceived to be of greater quality, such as artistic value or environmental value. "
It is an interactive "class" that allows people to bring in something that they may have typically thrown out or that is not being used and "make it new." I have items to upcycle if they don't want to bring one in. (Examples of items: old appliances, lamp shades, sporting equipment, small furniture, old artwork, etc) It's a great way for kids to learn that things can be re-used and recycled and made into art and don't always need to be thrown out.
For the educators, I think it would be a really fun experience in a relaxed environment. I will have music on and will engage with each participant to help them navigate the process of re-creating their item into something new. I also try to challenge them to explore their creativity.
The main learnings would be:1) How to look at different household items, clothing, and furniture differently. How these items can be future pieces of artwork.2) Learn which types of paint should be used on which items and different techniques to help decorate them.3) Which age groups tend to gravitate towards which items to upcycle/decorate.
