All About DEMENTIA - Memory Loss, Diagnosis & Hope for the Future
About this Event
Nearly one million people in the UK are living with dementia, yet the condition remains widely misunderstood.
Dementia is not one single disease, and it is not an inevitable part of ageing. While there is currently no cure, we now understand far more about its causes, the factors that may influence risk and the emerging developments offering genuine reason for hope.
Join REMEDI HEALTH for the next event in our All About series: an accessible and informative evening exploring memory, cognition and dementia.
Hosted by Deborah Evans, Founder and Clinical Director of REMEDI HEALTH, the evening will feature specialist speaker Dr Shehram Moghul, a Consultant Psychiatrist specialising in later-life mental health, with particular expertise in memory problems, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
What will the evening cover?
Together, we will explore:
- What dementia is—and how it differs from Alzheimer’s disease
- The different causes and types of dementia
- How common dementia is and who it affects
- The difference between everyday forgetfulness and changes that may need investigation
- Early signs involving memory, language, judgement, mood and everyday functioning
- How dementia is assessed and diagnosed
- Why a timely and accurate diagnosis matters
- Whether dementia can be prevented or delayed
- The relationship between cardiovascular health and brain health
- The influence of blood pressure, cholesterol and blood-sugar levels
- Women, menopause, HRT and what the evidence currently tells us
- The role of lifestyle, hearing, social connection and mental wellbeing
- The latest developments in diagnosis and treatment
- What emerging research could mean for the future of dementia care
Can we reduce our risk?
There is no guaranteed way to prevent dementia, and some risk factors - such as age and genetics - cannot be changed. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that many people may be able to reduce their risk or delay its onset.
What protects your heart can also help protect your brain. During the evening, we will discuss the practical, sustainable actions that can support long-term cognitive health - without miracle supplements, quick fixes or unrealistic promises.
Is there reason for hope?
For the first time, new treatments have been developed that act on one of the underlying disease processes involved in early Alzheimer’s disease, rather than only helping to manage symptoms.
These treatments are not cures, are only suitable for carefully selected people and require specialist assessment and monitoring. However, they represent an important scientific step forward.
Researchers are also investigating new approaches to earlier diagnosis and more personalised treatment. Dr Moghul will explain what is changing, what remains uncertain and why early diagnosis is becoming increasingly important.
