Some of the most phantasmic and mystical records released over the last few years have eminated from the voice and viola of Alison Cotton. Also familiar as one half of The Left Outsides, her solo works, All is Quiet at the Ancient Theatre, Only Darkness Now, and The Portrait You Painted Of Me, are whole worlds almost drawn up by incantation, perhaps even portals to the beyond. Over diaphanous drones, her viola swoops, groans, hollers, and lows whilst often wordless melodies resonate strangely, conjuring up images of places of preternatural power.
Her potent weaving of psychic folk, ritualistic drone, and arcane minimalism has captivated listeners beyond the usual, leading to performances at festivals as diverse as Supernormal, Krankenhaus, and Roadburn. Gushing acclaim has rained down from Wire, The Quietus, The Guardian, and so on, and both BBC Radio 3 and 6Music felt compelled to commision original compositions from her.
Her latest album, Englechen, tells the remarkable true story of sisters Ida & Louise Cook who secretly smuggled Jewish artists of of Nazi Germany. Cotton pays musical tribute to the little-known Sunderland natives with a mix of a capella pieces, emotive string arrangements and transformative foley. It’s a celebration of the human spirit, one that reflects a universality in its narrative which transcends the boundaries of history and impacts very urgently on our daily lives.
Chilling and forlorn, Cotton’s singular, unencumbered, and meticulous works will draw you into a place half real, half of her creation, and wholly inescapable.

SEALIONWOMAN
Sealionwoman is vocalist Kitty Whitelaw and double bass player Tye McGivern. Together, they craft a unique and defiantly uncategorisable sound. Whitelaw’s rich and beguiling vocal delivery and McGivern’s atmospheric, inventive approach to his instrument creates melancholy soundscapes, torch-song transgressions and rapturous drama.
