Alice Childress’ Like One of the Family: A Work In Progress

Join us for a special work-in-progress performance of Like One of the Family, an original puppetry production inspired by the beloved stories of Alice Childress. Created with the permission and support of the Alice Childress Estate, this is the first theatrical adaptation of these celebrated stories. Rather than presenting a finished piece, this evening invites you into the creative process, offering an opportunity to experience the work as it continues to evolve.
The production has grown out of months of community book circles, where Black women and femmes in Boston gathered to explore Childress's stories and the enduring questions they raise about race, labor, dignity, humor, and everyday Black life. Those conversations have become the heartbeat of this performance, informing the puppetry, storytelling, and theatrical world now taking shape.
Following the performance, guests are invited to share a communal dinner and participate in a talkback with the creative team. Your reflections and questions will help shape the next stage of the production's development.
This gathering takes place at the African Meeting House at the Museum of African American History—the oldest Black church building still standing in the United States. It is a fitting setting for Childress's work: a place where generations of Black Americans gathered to worship, organize, and fight for freedom. Together, we'll experience a new work inspired by one of America's greatest playwrights in a space that continues to hold the living history of Black resilience, creativity, and community.
