Algerian Raï Dance Workshop w/ Esraa Warda

Join NYC-based Algerian artist Esraa Warda for a special 2-hour workshop during her first ever visit to Detroit!
She'll be teaching the fundamentals of Raï, Western Algeria's counterculture known as the "rebel blues". It is a storytelling musical/dance culture that explores themes of subversion, exile, love, aribitariness, and loss, reflecting the region's social struggles.
The workshop is open level, all gender, all abilities. Participants will learn Rai's signature cathartic groove and footwork as well as it's cultural history.
It will be outdoors but covered from the sun.
- Wear comfortable clothes you can move in
- Wear light shoes/sneakers or option to be barefoot
- Bring a regular scarf that you can tie around your waist.
- No noisy coin hip belts please
