About this Event

Discover the driving, hypnotic percussion traditions of Algeria in this immersive, hands-on workshop. The frame drum- known across the Maghreb as the Bendir is the historical heartbeat of Algerian communal life.

Traditionally played by nomadic poets, storytellers, and matriarchal ensembles, these instruments carry deep oral histories of celebration, resistance, and spiritual devotion.

Led by expert Algerian percussionist and educator Samir Nacer, this masterclass guides participants through the fundamental mechanics and sophisticated polyrhythms of Algerian music. Drawing from his extensive experience performing, archiving, and teaching North African percussion traditions.

Samir will break down how to count, feel, and play signature regional time signatures. Attendees will explore the powerful 6/8 grooves of rural Chaouia folklore, the syncopated accents of classic Rai, and the elegant, structured phrasing of traditional Andalusi compositions.

No prior drumming or musical notation experience is required. Whether you are an experienced hand-drummer looking to expand your rhythmic vocabulary or picking up a frame drum for the very first time, this session provides a welcoming, community-focused space to connect with ancestral pulse and rhythm.

Bendirs [Frame drums] will be provided, though feel free to bring your own if you have one.
