PhilaMOCA presents a special one-night pre-Halloween screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1927 British silent film THE LODGER starring Ivor Novello with live score by NYC's MORRICONE YOUTH!
A Jack-the-Ripper type murderer called “The Avenger” is terrorizing London by targeting young blond women. How Hitchcockian! At the same time of these attacks, a mysterious man rents a room at the family-owned boarding house and strikes up a relationship with the proprietor’s pretty blonde daughter. To thicken the plot, she’s engaged to the policeman who is hot on the trail of “The Avenger” and thinks her Lodger lover is the serial killer! The Lodger is considered the “first true Hitchcock film” and is, obviously, a thrilling way to kick start your Halloween season.
Morricone Youth is a collective of New York City musicians founded in 1999 reinterpreting 100+ film and television works all over the world, from CBGB's and the top of the World Trade Center to the Brooklyn Academy of Music, MassMoCA, Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Sydney Festival, as well as supporting Italian prog soundtrack legends Goblin on their 2017 North American tour. The band has composed and performed 15 different silent film and midnight movie live scores, including F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu (1922), Robert Clouse’s Enter The Dragon (1973), Jack Hill's Foxy Brown (1974), David Lynch's Eraserhead (1977) and Rene Laloux's La Planete Savauge (1973), and embarked on a 15-vinyl series for each film in 2016, the first 7 of which have been released for George Miller's Mad Max (1979), George Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968), F.W. Murnau's Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927), Lotte Reiniger's The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926), Mario Bava's Danger: Diabolik (1968), Alfred Hitchcock's The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1928) and Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin (1926).
Years in the making – The Lodger: A Story Of The London Fog was composed for a live scoring of Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 British silent film classic, first performed live to a sold out audience at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Halloween 2013. Morricone Youth's original reworked live film score for "The Lodger" had a vinyl release in 2022 also distributed via Light In The Attic Records on orange 150g vinyl available through the Morricone Youth website and Bandcamp.
Doors 7:30 PM / $20 admission
