Prioritising feeling over perfectionism – this is the credo that drives the restless creativity of Alfa Mist.
Since the release of his debut full-length Nocturne in 2015, the East London multi-instrumentalist and producer has carved out a singular space in contemporary music. Blurring the lines between jazz orchestration, intimate bedroom production and boom-bap hip-hop beat-making, Alfa Mist has become one of the UK’s most distinctive and in-demand voices, collaborating with artists including Jordan Rakei and Tom Misch.
His journey into jazz was anything but conventional. Raised on grime and UK rap, Alfa began producing instrumentals during school lunch breaks before tracing the samples of producers like Madlib and J Dilla back to their jazz origins. Teaching himself piano by ear, he developed the harmonic language that would define his early records.
2017’s breakthrough album Antiphon amassed millions of streams, establishing Alfa as a producer with remarkable emotional depth and compositional maturity. Follow-ups Structuralism (2019) and Bring Backs (2021) expanded his introspective palette, balancing improvisation with meticulous arrangement.
In 2024, Alfa unveiled Roulette via his own Sekito Records – a sci-fi concept album set in a dystopian future where reincarnation is scientifically proven. The record further cemented his reputation as an artist unafraid to stretch form and narrative. Its release was marked by a landmark headline performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall alongside the Black Snow Orchestra.
2026 marks the return of this evergreen artist to Australia for a special Melbourne performance at Northcote Theatre on May 27. A commanding live presence known for transcendent, deeply immersive shows, Alfa continues to prove that music – when guided by feeling – has no ceiling.
