Speaker Bio:
Sister Deirdre Byrne is an active missionary sister and superior of her community in Washington, DC. She is double board-certified in Family Medicine and General Surgery. A native of the Washington, D.C., area, Sister Deirdre (known to many as Sister Dede) is one of eight siblings, graduated from Virginia Tech. After college she entered medical school at Georgetown University, trained as a Family Physician at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. She then served our great soldiers for 9 years of active service before beginning her surgical training, following in her thoracic surgeon father's footsteps. She completed a General surgical residency at Georgetown University and embarked as a medical missionary, serving in Haiti, Kenya, Sudan and Irag. She was led to the Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts community (Italian) whose charism involves placing each and every person she cares for between the Heart of Jesus and Mary thus caring for the soul and body. Her apostolate has been performing overseas medical missionary surgery and providing free medical care for the poor and uninsured. The over 130-year-old community includes 400 members Worldwide. By 2000, the board-certified Dr. Byrne made her commitment to the Little Workers and began her novitiate training in earnest. In September 11, 2001 she found herself at the base of the twin towers in NY giving food, water and first Aid to the firefighters along with a few religious sisters. As you know the world changed after that. Her reserve status catapulted her to active service and with special permission was able to complete her formation as a “Little Worker” and continue to serve 20 more years as a general surgeon as a reservist as needed.
Sister Dede retired with the rank of Colonel from the United States Army in 2009 after 29 years of service in the military. She was extremely grateful for the opportunity to have served the "brave soldiers" while deployed to Afghanistan in 2008. Over the years, Sister Deirdre has found it easy to integrate her medical and military service into her religious vocation. Though comfortable in scrubs, she wears a full black or a white working habit when she can and is grateful for the impact it has on those to whom she ministers. Currently, she is the superior of the D.C. Little Workers of the Sacred Hearts house near Catholic University, where the sisters run a pro-bono physical therapy clinic and diabetic eye clinic, retirement home for her elderly sisters as well as prolife ministry including the Abortion Pill Reversal and a pregnancy center. She also has treated over 500 Covid patients early in the disease with nearly 100% success.
She is presently assisting with a documentary on Euthanasia after a dear friend of 35 years was euthanized in St. Charles MO.
