9 November | 16 November | 23 NovemberDespite being the UK’s most baby-faced stand-up comedian, Alex Mason has just turned thirty. He’s over the hill. Bitter. Irrelevant.
He cracks a gap in the blinds and glares down at the boys taking a pit-stop between the pubs and clubs to noisily chat about nothing.
Shaking his head, Alex says to the Cheese Plant, “It’s eight-thirty on a Tuesday!” But the Cheese Plant doesn’t respond. Because it’s a plant. And it stopped caring a while ago.
hilst dragging on his Lost Mary, he chides the boys in his head. He wasn’t so inconsiderate at their age. Someone needs to put them right.
And then it occurs to him. “Now that I'm thirty, I can be their role model,” Alex says to the plant. “I’ll impart my wisdom through my art. And there’ll be lots of good jokes and a satisfying structure, because I’m great at stand-up, aren’t I, Mr. Cheese?”
Again, no response. The candles on the birthday cake flicker, casting shadows of them on the blinds.
