On February 15, Alex Jordan strolled into the Crazy Horse Saloon for the first time in several years. Before anyone knew what hit them, he was fronting Band Beyond Description on scorching versions of the Grateful Dead’s “Mr. Charlie” and “Viola Lee Blues.” It was one of those “lightning in a bottle” moments, as his guitar sorcery, charisma and all-around swagger flowed effortlessly off the stage. Then as quickly as he came, he was gone like a poof of smoke into the night. What we tasted on that unforgettable evening could be considered just the most subtle hors ‘d oeuvre compared to the full Alex Jordan Band experience we’re about to get. Touring in support of their new record, Queen Kerosene, everything is hitting on all cylinders for this dynamic group of musicians. Jordan’s laser-focused leadership and eclectic bag of tricks sets them apart from other Americana rock acts. Now a seasoned vet at a relatively young age, Jordan and the band know how to whip a crowd into a dancing frenzy with their high-energy performances.
Last August when the esteemed Grateful Guitars Foundation was hosting an event at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall featuring a who’s who of the scenes finest tribute artists, they turned to Alex Jordan to take on the role of musical director. That speaks volumes to how highly he’s regarded among his peers. Part of that stems from his standout guitar playing but a lot of it comes from his rare talent as a song arranger with a strong vision. Those elements and so much more are on display with his namesake band.
The Alex Jordan Band defines the essence of what Americana rock is all about. The songwriting is a throwback to classic 70s and 80’s rock like Springsteen and Seger, while sparkling with the polish of the present. Alex’s heartfelt lyrics, soulful vocals and alpha-dog guitar skills fuel the fire. It’s easy to see why some assert that the band is poised to become one of the most exciting new acts in the world of Americana and roots music.
