About this Event
The Alex Film Society is back with their 2024 film series at the Doctors House. So film fans bring your chairs, blankets and picnic dinners and enjoy these FREE screenings in the park. Three classic films will be shown this summer in partnership with Northwest Glendale Homeowner's Assn, the Glendale Historical Society and Brand Associates.
The series kicks off on Saturday June 8, with Walt Disney’s historic 1940 production of Pinocchio. Based on Carlos Collodi”s 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio.
Gates open at 5:30 and the film begins at 7:00
This was Walt’s follow up to his enormously successful Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and only the third full length animated feature produced by a major studio. Pinocchio was made during the “golden age of animation” from 1937 to 1941, years that saw the Disney lot in Burbank churning out hits that included Dumbo, Fantasia, and Bambi.
“When You Wish Upon a Star,” the song written for the movie, would win the Academy Award for Best Original Song of 1940. Sung by Cliff “Ukelele Ike” Edwards as the voice of Jiminy Cricket, it would become over the years, the signature song for The Walt Disney Company, used to introduce countless feature films and television episodes.
Glendale based animation producer/director and AFS Board Member Frank Gladstone will introduce this program with insights into the production and the artists that worked on the film, several of whom lived in Glendale.
