About this Event

This option allows you to sign up for all four classes in the Basics series (Ingredients, Brewing Process, Tasting & Evaluation, and Beer Styles) at a reduced rate per class. When you sign up the Basic Series, you become registered for all four classes and the class price drops to $25 per class. All classes include an educational presentation, handouts, and a guided beer tasting. All attendees must be 21+ years old to attend. This class is led by Alewife Co-Owner Kelly Pickard, Certified Cicerone®. Tickets are non-refundable.

1. Basics: Brewing Ingredients (Wednesday February 8)

Focus on the basic building blocks of understanding beers styles: malt, hops, yeast, and even water. For each ingredient, we will explore its history in brewing, how it is cultivated and prepared for the brewing process, and the flavors and other attributes it brings to the finished beer.

2. Basics: Brewing Process (Wednesday February 22)

This class will build on what we learned about ingredients to understand how they are used in the brewing process. This class will explore aspects of recipe development and brewing processes such as milling, mashing, lautering, boiling, fermentation, and conditioning. We will discuss how different approaches to aspects of the brewing process create the wide-ranging styles seen in your favorite breweries, bars, and stores.

3. Basics: Tasting & Evaluating (Wednesday March 8)

You don't need to have aspirations to become a certified beer judge to benefit from taking a more observant approach to drinking beer. As you begin to pay more attention to the beers you drink, you will start to understand which flavors you like, what is responsible for those flavors, and ultimately what beer styles you prefer. In this class, you will learn basic vocabulary for discussing beer flavors and the process for evaluating a beer's color, aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression. We will put it all together at the end by tasting beers together and walking through a beer evaluation sheet to practice our skills.

4. Basics: Beer Styles (Wednesday March 22)

This class will take a high-level approach to some of the most common beer styles out on the market. For each style we will touch on its historical development, quantitative parameters, flavor profile, key ingredients, and classic producers. This class is a great way to get a better understanding of why you gravitate towards specific beers styles and why you typically avoid others, beyond just because of the beer name or brewery that produced it.
