Before his solo career, he played in influential bands like the Nuns (punk), Rank & File (alt-country), and the True Believers (roots rock).
His solo work, starting with Gravity (1992), is noted for its literate lyrics and varied styles, with standout albums like A Man Under the Influence (2001), Real Animal (2008), and The Crossing (2018), which explored the immigrant experience.
Escovedo comes from a highly musical Mexican-American family. His father played mariachi and swing, while his siblings include jazz artists Pete and Coke Escovedo (both played with Santana) and pop star/drummer Sheila E.
Alejandro was inspired by acts like Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and the Stooges. Though he didn’t pick up guitar immediately, he immersed himself in the San Francisco punk scene with the Nuns, famously opening for the Sex Pistols’ last show in 1978, before eventually moving to New York City.
