Argentinian Music Ambassador - Alejandro Brittes
Hailed by The Boston Globe as a “leading exponent of Chamamé,” composer and researcher Brittes explores his Chamamé heritage, an ancient rhythm that connects us to the Earth and the Universe through music and dance, which was born from the encounter between the ritual musicality of the Guarani indigenous people and Baroque music. Having toured extensively in South America and Europe, Brittes recently concluded a 2023 East Coast tour supported by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation Iber Exchange: Library of Congress, Georgetown University, Queens Theatre, The Trust PAC (PA), Levitt Pavilion (CT), and other venues.
Honored to be selected as an UP NEXT artist! 2024 at the APAP Annual Conference in New York City, composer and researcher Brittes also conducts multilingual masterclasses, residencies, lectures, and workshops with institutions and ensembles on the history and culture of chamamé and the repertoire from his album "(L)Este" (2022), which includes original compositions for baroque ensemble that explore the roots of chamamé in the context of South American Jesuit missions. He also performs and teaches as a trio. Brittes has produced educational activities with various age/ability groups at institutions such as: George Mason University, Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Hamilton College, and the Morgan Arts Council.
"Alejandro was everything a presenter could hope for—virtuosity, grace, and the ability to genuinely connect with a community." - Keith Marks (Next Stage)
"[T]he students left the class visit and the performance impressed with the breadth and depth of the ensemble's preservation of chamamé." - Prof. Anthony DelDonna (Georgetown University)
