Alec Stone Sweet Concert
$30 General/$25 CAF Members
Alec Stone Sweet, who grew up in Bellingham, has recorded a range of Celtic, Appalachian, and other types of traditional music. He plays finger-style and clawhammer guitar (developed from old time banjo techniques). Alec has recorded three albums: Memory and Praise; Tumblin' Gap; and Chasing the Moon. Memory and Praise features dance music and six compositions by the Irish harpist, Turlough O’Carolan. "Extraordinary guitar playing, resembling no one else in touch, technique, or feel," wrote Jody Stecher, a Grammy-winner; and Acoustic Guitar magazine called the album “as enjoyable a collection of traditional music on solo guitar as we have ever heard.” Of his second album, Tumblin’ Gap, Martin Simpson wrote "Simply beautiful traditional music played with love, reverence, and fine tone,” and the Radio National Australia called the playing "spacious, haunting, exquisite.” From the review by the Old Time Herald: "Alec Stone Sweet is a guitar virtuoso. This album would be delightful on a late night, with the lights off, a dying fire in the fireplace, a bit of whiskey left in the glass. It would also serve to explain to the uninitiated just why we care so much about these old melodies, about just what a tune is really about." Alec is also featured on the compilation recordings: Roots and Branches: Appleseed's 21st Anniversary (along with Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Jody Stecher and Kate Brislin, among many other "folk" musicians); and Clawhammer Guitar: The Collection. In his day job, Alec is a professor at Yale University and the University of Hong Kong, and the author of multiple books on law and politics. The concert promises to focus on Celtic music and its international connections.
Doors will open at 3:30pm and music will begin at 4pm.
