An eclectic and exciting collection of forgotten gems and all-time classics from 1974.
ALBUMS TURNING 50 – THE 1974 EDITION is an eclectic and exciting collection of forgotten gems and all-time classics from 1974…songs and stories woven together in an authentic and heartwarming musical journey.
1974 – The lives of music loving teenagers are forever changed when Countdown screens in Australian homes for the first time. The show brings great Aussie music to the masses and has us huddling around the TV set every week to see who was number 1! Richard Nixon becomes the first US president forced to resign after the Watergate Scandal, Australia sees Gough Whitlam as Prime Minister, Evonne Goolagong defeats Chris Evert to win the Australian women's singles title, Swedish band Abba win the Eurovision song contest with Waterloo, Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee are wreaking havoc on a shell-shocked English side in The Ashes, and Christmas 1974 sees the city of Darwin flattened by cyclone Tracey.
Musically speaking, 1974 sees the release of some of the most timeless records ever made. Joni Mitchell, Queen, Bob Dylan, Steely Dan, Dolly Parton, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Linda Ronstadt, and ABBA all release chart-topping LPs. On home soil, Australian band, The Dingoes, release their self-titled album, featuring the now iconic Way Out West. Glam rockers, Skyhooks come out with their best-selling album Living in the 70s, Darryl Braithwaite led SHERBET, release their third studio album…Slipstream, and AC/DC record their debut album, High Voltage. All in all, it is a BIG year for music!
Albums Turning 50 – The 1974 Edition, has something for just about everyone. Performed by Queensland vocalist and entertainer Melanie Evans (Menopause the Musical) and joined by an outstanding group of musicians, led by guitar virtuoso and Musical Director, Simon Gardner (Good Morning Vietnam, Music from the Vietnam War Era – Live in Concert), with Chris Gilbert (Kevin Borich Express, Lecia Lousie, Mason Rack Band) on Bass, Danny Shamess on Keys, and Bennie Bishop on Drums, this show delivers masterful storytelling, audience engagement, and timeless classics from some of the most important albums of 1974.
