Aku Bersaksi...(I Bear Witness...) by Syafiq Halid Closing Activation

Syafiq Halid will be presenting 2 closing performances to mark the closing of the exhibition, Aku Bersaksi… (I Bear Witness…). This will take place on Saturday, 30th May at 5pm & 8pm.
**The exhibition which runs from 21st-29th May from 12-8pm daily does not require registration and accepts walk-ins)

There is limited space for each performance therefore registration is required. Please only book a ticket if you are certain you'll be able to commit to attending. Children below the ages of 10 will not be admitted due to the potentially loud nature of the work. Each performance will about 45 minutes.

What happens to artists when arts spaces die?

The life of an artist in Singapore can be precarious. There is a constant battle to justify one’s existence. Apparently, most arts spaces have a finite life span too no matter its history. There are few purpose built arts spaces, most are repurposed from a building with a past life. Even then, most of them live on borrowed time and thus, constantly having to justify its existence too.

In Aku Bersaksi… (I Bear Witness…), Syafiq Halid posits Aliwal Arts Centre as a sentient archive for the arts. If our bodies, our works, these buildings will perish someday, why wait till then to remember? If the arts centre is asked today, “what have you bore witness to?,” what would it say and how would it sound?

Drawing from Islamic metaphysic learnings, Syafiq envisions Aliwal Arts Centre as a jasad (vessel), reimagining the sonic experience through the building speaking its own material language. As the artist develops and grows, the building bears witness to this journey, paralleling Syafiq’s decade-long relationship and that of many others with it. Years of rehearsal, discipline, experimentation, failure, and transformation reverberating through corridors, absorbed into wood and retained in bricks. Now the building speaks, drums and hums... The building calls, Syafiq returns.
