AIR POLISHING TECHNIQUES AND APPROPRIATE APPLICATIONS

This course provides an evidence-based review of contemperary air polishing technology in dentistry, with a focus on both traditional abrasive powders, such as sodium bicarbonate, and therapeutic low-abrasive powders, such as glycine. Participants will learn to differentiate these technologies by understanding their mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, and appropriate clinical applications. The course will also provide a comprehensive review of proper techniques and protocols for the safe and effective use of each powder.

This program will review patient selection, biofilm management strategies, and best practices for integrating air polishing into preventive, periodontal, and implant maintenance therapies. Emphasis will be placed on optimizing clinical outcomes, enhancing patient comfort, and understanding the role of air polishing with contemporary treatment methods.

Clinical Outcomes: Air Powder Polishing

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Differentiate between abrasive and therapeutic polishing powders based on particle size and shape, abrasiveness, and clinical indications.• Identify the appropriate clinical applications for abrasive and therapeutic powders, including supragingival biofilm management, subgingival biofilm disruption, implant maintenance, stain removal, and sealant preparation.• Recognize the potential effects of various air polishing powders on enamel, restorative materials, prosthetics, orthodontic bonding agents, and soft tissues to support safe patient care.• Demonstrate the proper techniques including angulation, working distance, and motion.• Incorporate proper procedures for best practice methods for implant maintenance.• Identify contraindications and precautionary measures associated with air powder therapy, including patient-related medical considerations and procedure-specific limitations.• Recognize the limitations of air powder technology, including its inability to remove hard calculus deposits and the need for adjunctive hand or power scaling when indicated.

Angelina (Angie) MarinucciRamos RDH, MBA, CCSVP

Angie has held the title of Clinical Education Manager with HuFriedyGroup for the past 7 years. She is a Registered Dental Hygienist with 10 years of clinical experience.Sheobtained her master's in business administration (MBA) with a marketing focus, from La Salle University. She also holds a CCSVP credential, which focuses on hospital-level sterile processing standards.

Angie spends most of her time working with faculty, residents, and students in dental and dental hygiene programs. She frequently provides educational programs on dental devices and infection prevention related topics.

Prior to joining Hu-Friedy, Angie worked as a clinical registered dental hygienist and in medical market research consulting. She also partnered with several programs to conduct dental mission trips in Honduras and Jamaica. She was featured in the University of Pittsburgh’s alumni magazine in 2020 for her endeavors in continued education. She has formally been acknowledged by HuFriedyGroup for her interprofessional partnerships and focus on surgical instrumentation. In 2022 and 2025, she received the title of “Clinical Education Manager of the Year” from The HuFriedyGroup.
