About this Event
an intentional gathering space aimed to uplift Caribbean culture and heritage. Program attendees will participate in reflective exercises to generate memories and creative ideas about their relationship to Caribbean culture before creating a work of art on a blank white t-shirt that documents their lived experience in Boston as a person of Caribbean ancestry. The t-shirts created during the program will later become elements of a future public art installation centered around care, celebrations of Caribbean culture, and spurring civic action towards a stronger community.
This program is supported by a grant from the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture and the City of Boston.
Artist Bio: Lena Noni Browne is an Afro-Caribbean American artist, writer, and educator passionate about bridging the gaps between arts, faith & spirituality, and civic engagement. Beginning her career at arts organizations like 826 Boston and EdVestors, Lena spent years designing visual, performing, and literary art activations that empowered young people to explore their cultural, artistic, and socio-political identities in compassionately challenging spaces. During her Masters program in Arts Administration (Boston University), she expanded her reach, curating gallery talks and art workshops to explore the intersection of the arts and various social issues, like Pr*son reform and reproductive justice. As she delves deeper into a personal practice, Lena aspires to create interactive art spaces that celebrate her Afro-Caribbean heritage and invite others to uncover the sacred in their own unique identities. Through her work, Lena seeks to affirm each person's place in this world, encouraging deep reflection and purposeful action toward a more harmonious, just society.
