About this Event
The Time Between brings together seven artists whose practices explore the layered spaces between past and future, departure and arrival, rupture and repair, inheritance and invention.
Time is often imagined as linear, yet lived experience rarely moves so cleanly. Memory folds. History repeats. Trauma lingers. Joy reverberates. Migration stretches across generations, while acts of care can collapse centuries into a single gesture.
Through sculpture, installation, textiles, archival materials, public intervention, mixed media, and interactive technology, the participating artists examine how identity, memory, and history are continually shaped and reshaped. Their works engage themes of Black cultural history, ancestral presence, migration, collective participation, preservation, storytelling, survival, and liberation.
Across the exhibition, objects and images become living archives. Quilts serve as maps of memory and navigation. Family letters and photographs preserve stories of displacement, courage, and escape. Collaborative drawings transform visitors into participants, reminding us that history is continually authored in community. Sculptural forms hold traces of ancestry, ritual, and transformation, while digital and interdisciplinary works reveal identity as a spectrum—layered, evolving, and resistant to simplification.
Rather than offering definitive conclusions, The Time Between invites visitors to remain within uncertainty. Here, the “between” is not empty or merely transitional. It is a generative space where histories surface, relationships deepen, identities shift, and new futures begin to take form.
Presented as the culmination of the Andrew Freedman Home Artist Residency, the exhibition reflects the distinct voices of seven artists as well as the shared conditions of artistic practice: inquiry, experimentation, dialogue, and transformation.
