AI Transition Week: Is it Too Late to Stop the AI Revolution?

Is pausing the frontier of AI development necessary, and indeed possible?

What are governments doing “right” and “wrong” for safeguarding AI as a tool and not an enemy to humanity?

This conversation will center on the policy choices that could shape a safe and effective AI transition. We will learn about the decisions we must make as a society to ensure a safe future for all of mankind.

Professor Will Fithian (University of California, Berkeley) is an associate professor in the Department of Statistics. His research interests include post-selection inference / selective inference, scalable algorithms for massive data sets, multivariate analysis and dimensionality reduction in large data sets, methods for stable estimation and inference in heavy-tailed data, ecological statistics and microecology data, and theoretical and applied statistics.

Professor Wes Holliday (University of California, Berkeley) is a professor of philosophy, working mainly in logic and social choice theory. In logic, his research has ranged over modal and nonclassical logic, logic and natural language, and logic and probability. In social choice theory, he has focused on voting theory, computational social choice, and applications of social choice to AI ethics and safety.

Together, Professors Fithian and Holliday have been co-organizing a working group of other academics, studying the feasibility of an international pause on frontier AI training.
