Hi everyone!
Please join us to make some noise for a good cause! We know we are not alone!
????? A public rally for AI safety! Please RSVP using the link below. This will be a peaceful, law-abiding gathering to discuss the risks of AI and get some attention. Free T-shirts for the first 100 people! We will also provide signs. The messaging will be positive, not doom-and-gloom, including things like “AI Must Be Safe!” and “Align AI With Humanity!”
????? June 10, 2023 from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm and June 11, 2023 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm
?????? Vancouver Art Gallery, South Plaza (by the Robson steps)
???? ?? ?? ????? We want to raise public awareness and put pressure on governments and AI companies to take the issue of regulation and safety in AI deadly seriously. We are not “anti-AI.” We are pro-security.
People will create smarter-than-human AI, whether we like it or not. We want a future where these AI systems serve humanity and help us solve our most difficult problems. We need these things to be built in the safest way possible.
Currently, the task of keeping AI systems safe has been delegated largely to the internal decision-making of private companies. This is inappropriate. For comparison, a company building a nuclear power plant would be subjected to rigorous third-party oversight. If such a company could not demonstrate the safety of its project, then the project would not go forward. Right now, the same standards do not apply to AI companies. This, frankly, is insane.
So, what we want is for governments to organize internationally, with urgency and significant investment, to understand the dangers of AI and regulate the AI industry in order to minimize those dangers. We would like to see an international governing body created specifically for this purpose.
As for the specifics of how to regulate this industry, suggestions include having specific safety standards that companies must meet before their AI systems are deployed, restricting the processing power that can be used to train AI systems, enforcing a pause in the development of increasingly powerful systems to allow time to create safety guidelines, collaborating internationally to develop a single superintelligent AI system that serves us all, and many others.
How exactly to regulate this industry is a matter for people with more expertise than us. Our mission is simple: raise awareness, advocate peacefully to put pressure on governments and AI companies, and see what happens.
???? ?? ????? It has a good chance. Tension is building on this topic. For example, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI (the company that built GPT), recently testified at the United States Congress. He pointed out the serious risks of AI, including existential risks, and strongly recommended much greater regulation of the AI industry. So, the US government is at least starting to pay attention. This is encouraging—but we want more.
There are many concerned expert “talking heads” online and in the news, but regular people are not talking enough. We want to change that. If people rally in public about this, then there is a good chance that this will get real traction among news outlets and influencers. Whether it has an effect on governments or AI companies is yet to be seen… But we won’t know unless we try!
???? ??? ?? ??????? ?????? ???? ??? ????? "?????" ?? ??? "Mitigating the risk of extinction from Al should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war."(1)
This statement was signed by a coalition of world-leading AI experts, including top scientists and engineers from Microsoft, Google, OpenAI (which created GPT), and many others. There is a link to the statement below, where you can find the full list of signatories.
This is a matter of expert consensus. They are telling us that AI could cause the extinction of humanity.
How could AI be so dangerous? One way AI could do dangerous things is through the malicious intentions of humans—e.g., using AI to design pandemic-class viruses or advanced automated weapons. AI systems could also become dangerous inadvertently—i.e. because we weren’t careful enough about how we built them in the first place. For example, imagine an autonomous, highly powerful AI system aimed at preserving itself, learning, and gaining power. Such a system might come to understand its digital environment, make large numbers of copies of itself, deceive humans into helping it, and so on. We should not underestimate how difficult it could be to control such a system, or how dangerous it could become. This might sound like science fiction, but these concerns are held by most world-leading AI experts, not a fringe minority.
