About this Event

This workshop brings together ALLEA’s Research Ethics and Integrity Council (REIC) and invited experts to examine artificial intelligence in research from the perspective of research ethics and integrity – including trust in AI-assisted research assessment, AI and academic freedom, and AI's specific impact on research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. A dedicated panel considers how existing codes of conduct, including the ALLEA European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, can be upheld as the research environment evolves.

10:10: Keynote Address- AI in Research: Reflections from the Dutch Context

• Keynote speaker is Prof Jeroen de Ridder (KNAW) who is Professor of Political Epistemology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Chair of the Drafting Committee for the Dutch Code of Conduct for Scientific Integrity

• Panellists include Jeroen de Ridder, (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Deborah Oughton (Norwegian University of Life Sciences) and Krista Varantola (University of Tampere). Moderated by Maura Hiney, MRIA, chair of the ALLEA Research Ethics and Integrity Council.

This event comes at a time of substantial reflection and consideration in higher education and research communities on the responsible use of AI systems and technologies. Moreover, with the ALLEA European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity currently under review, there is an opportunity to consider how the broad principles agreed across Europe and already incorporated into practice in Ireland and other states can continue to be upheld in a changing research environment. This will be given specific consideration during a panel discussion on the role of codes in ensuring ethics and integrity in research.
