AI and Youth: Potentials & Perils

A discussion on the ways in which AI has infiltrated daily life and what it means for our children and teens. Although the literature is scarce at this point, there is considerable value in AI, while there are also significant risks. We will describe how AI chatbots and assistants, AI companions, AI toys, and AI tutoring are impacting children and teens. The discussion will explore these topics with parents and those invested in our youth.

Presenters:
Randy Kulman, Ph.D., is a child clinical psychologist and founder of Digitally Nutritious, a nonprofit that advises parents and providers on the healthy use of screen time and other technologies, such as AI, for neurodivergent youth. For 35 years, Dr. Kulman has also been the Clinical Director and President of South County Child and Family Consultants, a multidisciplinary group of private practitioners specializing in assessment and intervention for children with learning disorders and attention difficulties. Dr. Kulman is the author of numerous blog posts, book chapters, and books, including Playing Smarter in a Digital World and The Gaming Overload Workbook: A Teen’s Guide to Balancing Screen Time and Real Life.

Catherine Vieira-Baker, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical/health services psychologist in Virginia, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. She graduated from University of Maryland Baltimore County and has spent most of her career working with youth in schools. She currently is the Assessment Coordinator at the South Coast Educational Collaborative in Swansea, MA where she is responsible for the completion of psychological evaluations. She is also a member of the Board of Professional Affairs at the American Psychological Association and the President of the Rhode Island Psychological Association.
