Ahmed Abdullah (trumpet, composer, and educator) is one of the central figures in 21st-century Brooklyn Jazz. He joined the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1975, touring, recording and traveling extensively until 1997. His recently (2023) published memoir, A Strange Celestial Road, recounts that experience and many more he has had in the music. He and his wife, poet/vocalist Monique Ngozi Nri, have formed an organization, Melchizedek Music Productions, to aid in moving the arts forward in Brooklyn. He is a retired NYC Music Teacher after 20 years of service and has also retired from his role as Music Director of Sistas’ Place in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, after 25 years. He is currently an adjunct professor at the acclaimed New School and leads his own ensemble, Diaspora (Dispersions of the Spirit of Ra) in which he and his wife include poetry, dance and music of the African Diaspora along with the music of Sun Ra.
