About this Event

Three of the best 2021-22 IOA Diploma final projects undertaken at the London South Bank University (LSBU) will be presented. NTI-Audio UK managing director will present a prize to the winner of the 2021-22 best LSBU IOA Diploma final project award.

Please read below the abstracts of finalist projects to be presented at the meeting.

Building vibration from music festivals – Leo Fernandez There is disagreement over the cause of buildings swaying during music festivals in London, UK. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between sound pressure levels, crowd movement during artist performances, and the vibration measured in buildings neighbouring the festival site. The project considered the importance of building materiality and ground / soil conditions as well as criteria used to determine the impact those have on both people / structures. Vibration monitoring results, insights and potential remedial solution will be discussed.

Investigating BS4142:2014 reflection correction – Dan Hagan

This project provides empirical research and a critical investigation regarding the reliability of the correction penalty stated in BS 4142:2014+A1:2019, which alongside previous independent studies, is commonly believed not to warrant a blanket rule figure. Multiple experimental procedures were conducted to gather behavioural patterns of different source types in the presence of reflective surfaces. The data was then analysed to explore whether alternative correction values were more appropriate.

Acoustics of a complex learning disabilities school – Matt Hayes

The projects initial aim was to compare measured results in of a functioning Special Education Needs (SEN) school to performance standards from BB93 (2015). This work then led to the question of whether students at SEN schools were being adequately served by BB93 and potentially even the wider acoustics industry. The project evaluated the practical application of design and performance guidance and offers advice based on the findings in order to improve the acoustic performance of the spaces which fall below minimum performance standards.
