About this Event

A Conversation About the Comics, Justice, and Who We Decide to Protect

Join a law professor and postdoctoral fellow for The Superhero Problem: Why Justice Isn’t What You Think, an engaging evening exploring how superhero stories shape the way we understand justice, morality, and power. Drawing from our speaker's research at the intersection of constitutional law and storytelling, we will unpack how superhero narratives shape, and sometimes quietly challenge, the way we decide who deserves protection and who doesn't.

This isn’t a lecture about comic books or film analysis. It’s an honest, thought-provoking conversation about how stories influence our moral imagination, and why the way we define justice may be more complicated than it seems. Expect big ideas, surprising connections, and plenty of moments that make you rethink familiar narratives.

Don’t miss your chance to sip, think, and connect with fellow curious adults through your After5Society.

About The Speaker:
Dr. Fábio Rezende Braga is a Werner Baer Postdoctoral Fellow in Political Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where his current research is a comparative constitutional analysis of vulnerability in Brazil and the United States. He holds a PhD in Human Rights and Democracy from the Federal University of Paraná, one of Brazil's leading public research universities, and he previously held a visiting research appointment at the University of Oklahoma's Center for Brazil Studies. A constitutional law scholar by training, Fábio works at an unusual and compelling crossroads - between law, philosophy, and culture - using graphic novels and superhero narratives as a lens for thinking about human rights, gender, and social justice. He has written extensively on feminist constitutionalism, vulnerability, and the legal imagination, and he's known for making serious legal questions land in a way that feels human, surprising, and a little bit fun.
