About this Event

A Science-Driven Conversation about Extremes & Identity

Join a marine biologist and Harvard Ph.D. candidate for The Deep Sea: What Earth's Biggest Mystery Reveals About Us, an eye-opening conversation that explores how life survives, and even thrives, in Earth’s most extreme environments. From crushing pressure and total darkness to toxic chemicals and scarce resources, we’ll uncover what deep-sea organisms reveal about adaptation, resilience, and what it really means to be “normal.”

This isn’t a technical lecture. It’s a lively, interactive discussion that connects cutting-edge ocean science to bigger human questions about belonging, difference, and survival at the margins with plenty of surprising facts and “how is that even possible?” moments along the way. Curious minds (and curious questions) welcome.

Don’t miss this chance to reflect, connect, and rethink what it means to live at the edge with your After5 Society.

About The Speaker:
Brooke Travis is a marine biologist and Ph.D. candidate at Harvard University studying life in Earth’s most extreme environments. Building on her marine science background from Cornell University, her research focuses on deep-sea ecosystems around hydrothermal vents, where organisms survive without sunlight through remarkable symbiotic relationships with bacteria. Brooke’s work challenges traditional ideas about the limits of life, exploring how species adapt to darkness, pressure, and low oxygen. Known for making complex science accessible, she brings curiosity, clarity, and awe to conversations about the deep sea and what it reveals about resilience and survival.
