June 17, 3-9pm

After Hours, an evening of art, community, and celebration, will kick off in June with a partnership with Make the Road, a book talk with Bushra Rehman, and knockout live music performances from STEFA* and Las Mariquitas.

The museum galleries and cafe will be open until 9pm with activations including an immigration resource fair; a curator tour of exhibitions by Tracey Rose and Aliza Nisenbaum; open studios with artists Cameron A. Granger, Nsenga Knight, and Catalina Schliebener Muñoz; artmaking workshops for the whole family; a salsa dance class; and food, drinks and live music performances on the museum’s doorstep in beautiful Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

Queens Museum is thrilled to present After Hours as part of two fantastic festivals happening in June: Queens Rising and This is NY: Celebrating Our Immigrant Heritage and Communities. Queens Rising is a month-long multi-disciplinary arts celebration created to highlight the borough’s culture and creative diversity. This is NY: Celebrating Our Immigrant Heritage and Communities is a part of Lincoln Center’s Festival of New York and runs from June 11 to June 21.

About the Artists, Speakers, and Partners:

Las Mariquitas: “Una nueva pagina en el libro de la salsa,” Las Mariquitas is New York’s queer and trans-centered salsa band. A political liberation project, Las Mariquitas celebrates the community of LGBTQIA+ salserxs in a safe space. Las Mariquitas shares the stage with queer and trans dance instructors, creating a culture of consent on the dance floor, and honors the legacy of salsa as liberation music by writing new queer and trans feminist songs for the canon.

stefa marin alarcon aka STEFA* is a vocalist, composer, and multi-media performance artist born and raised in Queens, NY. Using an amalgamation of punk, experimental pop & classical minimalism with maximalist queer aesthetics, stefa builds worlds that offer a somatic decolonial respite for the misfits & displaced yearning for a sense of home. They have shared their work, spirit, and song with Queens Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Museo Del Barrio, The Kitchen, Ars Nova, National Sawdust, Body Hack and many more. They are 2022 Queer|Art|Prize for Recent Work Winner for their cinematic ritual opera, Born With An Extra Rib.

Bushra Rehman: Rehman’s dark comedy, Corona, was chosen by the NY Public Library as one of its favorite books about NYC. She is co-editor of Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today’s Feminism and author of the collection of poetry Marianna’s Beauty Salon, described by Joseph O. Legaspi as “a love poem for Muslim girls, Queens, and immigrants making sense of their foreign home–and surviving.” Her new novel, Roses, in the Mouth of a Lion, is a modern classic about what it means to be Muslim and queer in a Pakistani-American community was chosen as a Best Book and Editor’s Choice by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, People Magazine, Good Morning America, Goodreads, The Chicago Review, BuzzFeed, Lit Hub, Lambda Literary, BookRiot, PopSugar, The AV Club, E! News, Ms. Magazine and more.

Jaishri Abichandani (she/her; b. 1969, Bombay, India) immigrated to New York City in 1984. She received her MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London and has continued to intertwine studio and social practice, art and activism in her career, founding the South Asian Women’s Creative Collective (SAWCC) in New York (1997) and London (2004). Abichandani has exhibited internationally including at P.S.1/MoMA, the Queens Museum of Art, and Asia Society in New York, 798 Beijing Biennial and Guangzhou Triennial in China, IVAM in Valencia, Spain, and the House of World Cultures in Berlin. She served as the founding Director of Public Events and Projects from 2003-06 at the Queens Museum of Art, where she organized Fatal Love: South Asian American Art Now, Queens International 2006: Everything All at Once, and curated Her Stories: Fifteen Years of SAWCC. In 2017, Abichandani engineered a collaboration between the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, Asia Society and the Queens Museum to organize a three-day national convening of South Asian American artists, academics and curators; along with the exhibition Lucid Dreams and Distant Visions, in which she was a co-curator and a participating artist. In 2019, Abichandani organized a trilogy of exhibitions to inaugurate the Ford Foundation Gallery: Perilous Bodies, Radical Love, and Utopian Imagination centered the visions of BIPOC artists. Abichandani’s work is in the Burger Collection, Asia Art Archive Collection, and Saatchi Collection. She has been a resident of LMCC’s Process Space residency and an honoree of the Brooklyn Arts Council and ASHA for Women. She was awarded grants by the FST Studio Projects fund and the Foundation for Contemporary Art in 2021.

Make the Road New York builds the power of immigrant and working class communities to achieve dignity and justice. Their model integrates four core strategies for concrete change: Legal and Survival Services to tackle discrimination, abuse and poverty; Transformative Education to develop community members’ abilities to lead our organization, our movement, and society; Community Organizing to transform the systems and power structures impacting our communities; and Policy Innovation to rewrite unjust rules and make our democracy truly accountable to all of us. Staff and members repeat a common refrain: “Make the Road is my second home.” Regardless of immigration status, race, or gender identity, all find safety, support, and solidarity here. Everyone who comes with an individual story of abuse and exploitation finds that they are not alone – that in collectivizing our experiences and voices, we can build the power to change not just one case, but entire systems.

Cameron A. Granger (b. 1993, Cleveland, OH; currently based between Columbus, OH and New York, NY) is Sandra’s son. Inspired by the rigorous archival practices of his grandmother, Pearl, that he witnessed as he came up in Cleveland, Granger uses his work as a means to quilt the histories of his communities, redacted by Empire, into new, not just potential, but inevitable futures. His recent projects include “Everybody’s got a little light under the sun,” a free food and short film program made in collaboration with Willowbeez Soul Veg and the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, and “The Get Free Telethon” a twenty-four-hour livestream community fundraiser for Columbus groups Black Queer Intersectional Collective, Healing Broken Circles, and Columbus Freedom Coalition, sponsored by Red Bull Arts. He’s an alumni of the Studio Museum in Harlem AIR program, and Euclid public schools.

Nsenga Knight (b. 1981, Brooklyn, NY; currently based in Cairo, Egypt and New York, NY) has exhibited her artwork at Contemporary Image Collective in Cairo, Egypt, the New Museum for Contemporary Art, New York, NY; MoMA PS1, Long Island City, NY; the Drawing Center, New York, NY; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX; Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art, Brooklyn, NY; BRIC Arts, Brooklyn, NY; AIR Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; among others. Knight has been awarded with a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant, a Southern Constellations Fellowship, the Leeway Foundation Art and Change Grant, and Brooklyn Arts Council grants. She has held artist residencies at BRICworkspace in Brooklyn, NY, the Drawing Center in New York, Elsewhere Museum in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Galveston Artist Residency in Galveston, Texas, Brandywine Workshop in Philadelphia, Film/Video Arts Center in New York, and was a BCAT/ Rotunda Gallery Multimedia Artist in Residence in Brooklyn, NY.

Catalina Schliebener Muñoz (b.1980, Santiago, Chile; currently based in Brooklyn, NY) is a Sudamerican, Chilean-born visual artist who works primarily with collage, installation, and murals. Their work draws on images, objects, and narratives associated with childhood and explores gender, sexuality, and class. Their work has been exhibited in Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Santiago, Chile), Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (New York, NY), Bronx Museum of the Arts (New York, NY), Children’s Museum of Manhattan (New York, NY), Boston Center for the Arts (Boston, MA), Centro Cultural de España (Santiago, Chile), Centro Cultural Recoleta (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Center for Books Arts (New York, NY), Catalyst Arts (Belfast, Northern Ireland), Tiger Strikes Asteroid (Brooklyn, NY), Hache Galería (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Galería Jardín Oculto (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Galería Metropolitana (Santiago, Chile), and Bureau of General Services—Queer Division (New York, NY), among others. A recipient of multiple FONDART Grants (Cultural and Arts Development Fund of the Government of Chile), Schliebener Muñoz also received grants from DIRAC (Board of Cultural Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Relations of Chile) and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (New York, NY). They also received a Queer Artist Fellowship from the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (2017), and an Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) Fellowship from the Bronx Museum of the Arts (2018). In addition, Schliebener Muñoz has extensive teaching experience, from early childhood education to undergraduate education, on topics ranging from philosophy and art theory to art instruction in schools, studios, and museum settings. They are currently working as a teaching artist with the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and they facilitate gender and sexuality trainings for the Early Childhood Professional Development Institute at the City University of New York (CUNY). Schliebener Muñoz has also worked as a teaching artist with the Queens Museum. They received a Bachelor of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the Universidad de Arte y Ciencias Sociales (ARCIS; Santiago, Chile).
