“Ballroom is a place created for those without a place to call their own.”
“Balls are a gathering of people who are not welcome to gather anywhere else. A celebration of a life that the rest of the world does not deem worthy of celebration.”
Ballroom culture is nothing short of a living, breathing art form—a dazzling fusion of performance, fashion, and radical self-expression that emerged from the depths of marginalization. Founded by Black and Latinx transwomen of mid-20th century New York, it is, at its essence, a subversive reimagining of identity and society’s rigid structures.
Imagine a ball as an ephemeral gallery of movement and form. Here, participants “walk” not just to be seen but to create moments that transcend the boundaries of gender, race, and class.
Category participants are required to walk one by one to receive full approval from all judges, known as ‘getting your 10s’. Competitors are judged on their abilities, “effect” (costumes, appearance, theatrics, presentation), and perceived “realness” (embodied and/or visual believability, authenticity)—those who get their 10s battle against each other for trophies, cash prizes, and glory.
Ballroom culture historically offered a safe space for marginalized LGBTQ+ people of color to express themselves creatively and be celebrated. Its influence has spread globally, especially through media like Paris Is Burning, Pose, Legendary, and House On Fire, shaping fashion, dance, and language in mainstream culture.
In essence, ballroom culture is the art of survival made extravagant. It is performance as protest, costume as armor, and dance as storytelling. It defies categorization because it creates its own—forever changing the lens through which we view both art and identity. To understand ballroom is to witness a revolution in motion.

💛💚 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗲 ❤️🖤:
Bring it in a stunning look using one or a combination (two, three, four) of the Pan-African colors: red ❤️, yellow 💛, green 💚, and black 🖤. Don’t forget that your effect should exude class and fashion.
**SHOES AND ACCESSORIES DO NOT COUNT AND CAN BE IN ANY COLOR**
‼ 𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐲𝐊𝐢𝐤𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐞 ‼:
We’ve chosen the Pan-African colors—red, yellow, green, and black—as our theme for the ball. These colors hold deep significance across the African continent, symbolizing unity, liberation, and pride. They are a celebration of African heritage, strength, and resilience, serving as a reminder of the shared struggles and triumphs of people of African descent.
While these colors are a powerful symbol of African identity, 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙡𝙮 𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙋𝘼𝙍𝙏𝙄𝘾𝙄𝙋𝘼𝙉𝙏𝙎 𝙩𝙤 𝙟𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙥𝙚𝙘𝙩. The theme isn’t just about representing a culture but embracing the values of unity, equality, and freedom that these colors embody. 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙚 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚, 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙥𝙞𝙧𝙚𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝—𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙧𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜.
