About this Event
A symposium hosted by SFU's Institute of Black and Afro Diaspora Research and Engagement (IBADRE) in Collaboration with Building Bridges with Rwanda & Remember Rwanda 25 Year Legacy Project (RR25)
As the African Union redefines justice, Rwanda's experience challenges how the world understands healing and transitional justice. Transitional justice includes a range of measures to address the legacies of historical and contemporary mass atrocities. This symposium and dialogue situate Rwanda's transitional justice experience in the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi within the broader framework of the African Union's redefinition of transitional justice that advances a distinctly Afrocentric and pan-African decolonial vision grounded in local realities, collective healing, and long-term societal transformation.
