About this Event
Have you had enough of all these Black History Month Events that only talk about things we'd rather leave in the past? Have you made your peace, and are ready to start looking forward to the future? Are you looking to be in an uplifing environment where you can leave with your soul a little lighter, and a little more bounce in your step?
Welcome to Afro-Futures, Afro-Past! Join us at Park Slope United Methodist Church for a family friendly day filled with celebration, live drumming, and an exploration of Afro-Futurism through graphic novels. Dive into thought-provoking discussions, engaging workshops, and a captivating live drumming performance that highlights the rich tapestry of the African diaspora's past, and future. Connect with fellow attendees and immerse yourself in the beauty and resilience of Afro-centric narratives.
We will be joined by renowned graphic Novelist, Tim Fielder, who will be giving us an insider's take on Afro-Futurism. Tim has won the prestigious 2018 Glyph Award, and his work has been showcased in the Hammonds House Museum, Exit Art and NYU Gallatin Gallery. He also attended HBCU, Jackson State University.
We will also be joined by The Women of the Calabash. A world renowned percussion group that draws inspiration from Africa and the African Diaspora. The group has shared the stage with the Temptations, Richie Havens, Philip Glass, Odetta, Max Roach, Ashford & Simpson and others.
This event will definitely sell out (our most recent event did), so don't miss this opportunity to honor our past, envision our future, and celebrate the vibrant spirit of the African community. This event is family friendly, so bring the kids as well! We can't wait to see you there!
