This August, the Historic D.A. Dorsey House in Miami's historic Overtown area becomes a beacon of free expression with AfriKin: Story of the Orisha, an art exhibit challenging the recent surge in book bans across the United States, notably in Florida.

In alignment with the critically acclaimed “On The Ban Wagon – The Power of the Pen”, this exhibit continues the dialogue through a powerful lens of visual art, bringing to life the themes, stories, and voices being silenced by censorship. As unbound pages, we are using art as unsilenced narratives to enlighten and empower our AfriKin about literary works that have significantly shaped the Black world.

AfriKin: Story of the Orisha unites artists, activists, and communities in a month-long exploration of the critical role that freedom of expression plays in a thriving society. From August 17th to September 15th, 2024, the Historic D.A. Dorsey House will showcase a diverse collection of artworks that respond to, reflect on, and rebel against the ongoing attempts to restrict access to literature. This exhibit not only highlights the books under threat but also delves into the broader implications of such bans on creativity, education, and democracy.
