African Warrior-Queen: Njinga of Ndongo, Netflix, and the Dawn of History on the ‘Dark Continent'
Njinga of Ndongo is one of history’s most fascinating rulers. The first ‘female king’ of her kingdom, Ndongo in west-central Africa, she led a sixty-year resistance against the Portuguese who tried to conquer it. Her story has recently been turned into a Netflix docu-drama series by Jada Pinkett Smith. Luke Pepera, one of its main contributors, speaks about Njinga’s life, legacy, and how African history is inspiring a new wave of stories.
Luke Pepera is a writer, broadcaster, anthropologist, and historian, specialising in African history. He was born in Ghana and studied Archaeology & Anthropology at Oxford.
