Theme: Unmasking the Youth Suicide Crisis & Strengthening Collaborative Action for Community Well-being
About this Event

Suicide prevention within Minnesota's African immigrant and refugee communities requires urgent attention, as evidenced by the tragic loss of more than 20 youths last year. Cultural stigmas and the lack of culturally relevant data contribute to the underreporting of these deaths, hindering effective intervention. The broad use of umbrella terms like ‘Black’ in public health and policy discussions further obscures the distinct needs of immigrant and refugee communities, leading to inadequate and ineffective service delivery. Programs often fail to account for language barriers and cultural norms, limiting their reach and impact.

This stakeholders meeting aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among community leaders, mental health professionals, policymakers, and advocacy organizations. Together, we will explore the implications of underreporting and underfunding, as many immigrant and refugee groups are not recognized by funders as having unique mental health needs rooted in trauma and displacement. We will also address the need for more granular data to inform policy interventions, ensuring that legislation is responsive to the specific requirements of immigrant communities.
