African bass drums, primarily the West African dunun (or dundun) family, are cylindrical, stick-played drums that provide the deep, melodic foundation for ensembles, often accompanied by bells. They come in three main sizes—kenkeni (small/high), sangban (medium/mid), and dununba (large/low)—and are made from wood with cowhide heads.
