Description: When it comes to LGBTQ+ youth, being able to support and affirm their identities can be lifesaving work. This workshop covers basic information including definitions, the use of pronouns, and the differences between gender expression, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Participants will also learn important strategies to ensure that the LGBTQ+ youth they work with feel seen and cared for including interpersonal and organizational approaches.
Objectives:
1. Gain a basic understanding of common terms regarding gender and sexual orientation
2. Understand the different between gender identity, gender expression, sex assigned at birth, and sexual/romantic attraction
3. Review the proper use of pronouns and why they’re important
4. Practice how to use inclusive language for all young people
5. Take away key strategies for supporting and affirming LGBTQ+ youth

Skill Level: Recommended for LMSW beginning skill level.

Kaleigh Cornelison, LCSW is a trainer, facilitator, and social worker. She has over 13 years of experience as a social work and public health leader in community- and systems-based consulting and program management. Kaleigh supports nonprofits, health centers, universities, and schools through engaging professional development and consulting. She has also worked directly with adolescents and young adults in private practice and in school-based settings. She has a Master’s degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. Previously, she was the Assistant Director of the Adolescent Health Initiative and currently supports the development of HIV Workforce eLearning opportunities at ETR, a health equity organization. She lives in beautiful Dexter, Michigan with her wife, daughter, and rescue pup, Calvin.
