About this Event
Abstract:
Waterflooding is the most widely applied secondary recovery method in conventional oil reservoirs, typically providing an additional 20–40% of OOIP through pressure maintenance and improved sweep efficiency. Although maintaining an injection-to-production ratio (IPR) ≥ 1.0 supports reservoir pressure, field experience shows that injection balance alone does not ensure effective displacement or conformance.
Waterflood performance is often limited by reservoir heterogeneity, poor zonal isolation, and out-of-zone injection, leading to inefficient sweep, early water breakthrough, and reduced recovery. High-permeability streaks, fractures, and channeling pathways can accelerate breakthrough, while poor vertical and areal conformance results in bypassed oil and increased water handling costs, with potential long-term implications for field abandonment.
This session presents practical diagnostic and surveillance workflows to identify conformance issues, evaluate sweep efficiency, and optimize injection strategies. Through integrated, data-driven approaches, reservoir engineers can mitigate breakthrough risks, improve displacement efficiency, and enhance ultimate recovery in mature waterflooded reservoirs.
