About this Event

Through September 5, 2022:

Now in its final weeks, MULTITUDES showcases some 400 stellar works, including recent gifts and new acquisitions that will be exhibited for the first time. The features a wide range of works – from dazzling early American portraits, needlework, and quilts to idiosyncratic creations of the 20th and the 21st centuries, such as sculptures made of recycled materials, color-tinted photographs, and fragments of art environments. Presented non-chronologically, the works in the exhibition are visually clustered to reveal not only their individuality but also their commonalities.

Please note that the Museum's galleries will be closed from September 7 to September 22 for the installation of Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered.

Opening on September 23, 2022:

Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered will reintroduce a singular self-taught artist of the 1930s and 1940s to contemporary audiences. As the sole venue for this exhibition, AFAM’s presentation is the most comprehensive gathering of Hirshfield’s work ever assembled. Featuring loans from private and public collections, Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered features over 40 of the self-taught artist’s paintings, including iconic works such as Girl with Flowers, Stage Beauties, Parliamentary Buildings, and Inseparable Friends.

The exhibition is curated by Richard Meyer, Robert and Ruth Halperin Professor of Art History at Stanford University. Susan Davidson served as curatorial advisor to the exhibition. Valérie Rousseau, the American Folk Art Museum (AFAM)’s Senior Curator of Self-Taught Art and Art Brut, is the show’s coordinating curator.
