In the behavioral health community, there is growing interest in adventure, both as a concept and a practical therapeutic tool for the treatment of many different mental health disorders. Physical exercise has been a subject of interest for quite some time, but currently, specific adventure sports such as rock climbing are being investigated. How do we define adventure and what aspects appear to have therapeutic benefits? How does this relate to ADHD and anxiety, and how can we apply this in our own practices?
Learning Objectives:
Explain the neurobiological mechanisms underlying ADHD and anxiety.
Explain the current interest in the concept of adventure.
Evaluate the therapeutic potential of adventure sports.
Differentiate between maladaptive and adaptive risk-taking behaviors.
