Advent Service of Lessons and Carols - CHOIR OF SAINT JAMES

This Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols originated at King’s College, Cambridge, England, in 1934 and was composed by Dean Eric Milner-White, who had also been responsible nine years earlier for beginning the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols for Christmas Eve. In his Preface to the Advent service, Dean Milner-White wrote: “In the old English liturgies, the Advent Offices made a preparation for the coming of our Lord to the earth far more vivid and eager than those of our present Prayerbook. So an Advent Carol Service, if without precedent, is not without suitability, if it helps to express ‘the desire of all nations and ages.’” One purpose of this service is “not to celebrate Christmas, but to expect it.”

The CHOIR OF SAINT JAMES is honored to bring this English tradition to American audiences in the style of King's College, Cambridge.

IF DRIVING SOUTH ON ST. ANDREWS TOWARD WILSHIRE: Turn left on Wilshire, then an immediate right onto St. Andrew’s Place; Turn right on Ingraham; Turn right into 4th driveway and wait for attendant to open gate. Park anywhere.This is a rear entrance labeled “Neighborhood Housing Services of Los Angeles.”
