Cantabile is delighted to have been invited to sing for an Advent service of readings, hymns and carols in Grouville Parish Church on Advent Sunday (1 December) at 6pm. The service this year is largely based upon the service pattern followed annually in St. John’s College, Cambridge. Familiar readings, stirring Advent hymns for everyone to sing, and a wide range of choral music for the Advent season combine to create a memorable sequence.
The choral items included span from the 13th-century carol Angelus ad Virginem to the present where we perform carols by a trio of brilliant UK female composers – Judith Weir, Sally Beamish and Lucy Walker.
In-between, we include well-known music by Tallis, Bach, Bairstow, and others.
Before the service (from about 5.45pm), Graham Caldbeck, the choir’s Musical Director will give a short organ recital of seasonal music.
In an increasingly secular age, perhaps unexpectedly the enjoyment of church music flourishes and Cantabile hopes to share its musicmaking with a packed church.
