This full-day workshop dives into advanced watercolor surface techniques to create layered, textured, luminous paintings. Students will experiment with masking fluid, stencils, salt texturing, lifting, glazing, negative painting, and granulation effects to build complex, multi-dimensional pieces.
By the end of the workshop, students will be able to:
Combine multiple resist and texture methods (masking, salting, stenciling) effectively.
Demonstrate timing control — when to apply and remove textures for best effect.
Create depth and luminosity through transparent glazing.
Apply negative painting to define forms with color rather than outlines.
Finish a cohesive mixed-technique watercolor painting ready for display.
Students Bring:
Watercolor paints (professional or artist-grade set)
Brushes: round #4, #8, flat 1”, liner brush, old toothbrush
Water jars, palette, paper towels, kneaded eraser
Pencil for light sketching
White gel pen or metallic pen for accents
Masking tape or low-tack artist tape
