At its heart, photography isn't about stealing a fleeting moment from time, it’s about deliberately constructing a visual story.

I’m Sarmad Hasan, a professional photographer and documentary filmmaker with over 15 years behind the lens. Throughout my career, I’ve created visual content for global organizations and brands including Coca-Cola, the UN, the British Council, and TEDx. I’m running this walking masterclass to pass on real-world visual grammar, deliberate framing techniques, and spatial discipline to dedicated photographers ready to elevate their craft.

Moving from the brutalist geometry of the Barbican Estate, down through historic City passages, across the river, and culminating along the kinetic backdrops of the South Bank, we will spend three hours putting advanced visual storytelling and narrative exposure techniques into practice.

Your ticket includes:

• 3 hours of intensive, on-street mentoring covering advanced composition and narrative shutter/exposure techniques with live, real-time feedback.
• Strict 6-person cohort cap to ensure uncompromised, 1-on-1 guidance throughout the route.
• 5 professionally retouched portraits of yourself taken by me during the walk and delivered in high resolution post-workshop.

What You’ll Learn

We move beyond surface-level aesthetics to focus on advanced visual grammar and intentional narrative controls:

• The Exposure Triangle for Narrative: Using shutter speed and aperture not just for correct exposure, but as intentional storytelling tools (e.g. slow-shutter panning shots to isolate kinetic subjects in motion against static cityscapes, deliberate motion drag, and selective focal planes).
• Rule of Thirds & Dynamic Intersection: Strategic placement of narrative anchors where the viewer's eye naturally travels.
• Leading Lines & Spatial Depth: Directing visual momentum through urban geometry and perspective compression.
• Dynamic Diagonals: Generating tension and visual energy within static architectural compositions.
• Natural & Architectural Framing: Exploiting structural cutouts, shadow pockets, and archways to isolate subjects cleanly.
• Figure-to-Ground Contrast: Spotting subtle illumination differences to make subjects pop distinctly off complex urban backdrops.
• Intentional Proximity & Filling the Frame: Eliminating clutter to build immediate intimacy.
• Center-Dominant Eye Alignment: Crafting compelling, piercing portrait gazes.
• Patterns, Repetition & Rhythm Interruption: Building visual cadence and capturing the exact moment an anomaly breaks it.
• Geometric Symmetry & Balance: Creating powerful visual equilibrium.
• Subverting the Rules: Learning when to break these rules for maximum impact.

Info: Meet at the sunlit Lakeside Terrace by St Giles Cripplegate for briefing and technical setup. We immediately dive into brutalist structural geometry—working with hard shadow lines, geometric symmetry, texture repetition, dynamic diagonals, and isolating subjects against concrete forms.

Motion, Narrative Exposure & Transitional City Light (Millennium Bridge)

Info: Moving out of the estate and down through historic City passages toward the Thames. We focus on storytelling through shutter mechanics—dialling in slow-shutter panning shots to isolate moving commuters against static backdrops, dynamic motion blur, natural architectural framing, and reading directional street light.

Environmental Portraiture, River Atmosphere & Debrief (South Bank)

Info: Crossing the river to work along the kinetic energy of the South Bank. Focus on center-dominant eye alignment, figure-to-ground contrast using riverside reflections, and final portrait capture setups. We conclude with a dedicated live image critique, technique troubleshooting, and creative debrief.
