Advanced Papermaking Workshop: Pulp Painting

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to delve into the unique technique of pulp painting. This method was embraced by many visual artists, using scrap papers and dyed them to create colourful pulps. Pulp painting offers an embodied experience that allows participants to explore painting in a new way.
Pulp painting is an experimental papermaking method in which dyed pulp is applied to freshly pulled sheets of paper. As the pulp dries, the dyed fibres bond with the base pulp to create a unified image that blends painting and papermaking.
In this workshop, many techniques will be shared that combine freestyle painting and stencilling. Through “drawing” with bottled pulp and applying pulp with spoons, brushes, and everyday materials, paper makers can create expressive or controlled images and patterns. Hard edges and clean lines can be produced with the help of hand-cut stencils. Plus simple inclusions like string and newspaper clippings can add yet another dimension to the paper.
Anyone who likes to dabble with new art-making processes will be able to learn a new non-toxic technique that can incorporated into handmade prints, paintings, artist books, installations, and endless craft projects.
The papers will be ready to be picked up two days following the workshop.

What you will learn in this 2 hour and a half workshop:

1. "Action Painting": Participants will consider the movement of their hands as they apply coloured pulp to wet pulp, observing how the colours interact and capture motion. Also, they learn how to layer the pulps and explore new ways of approaching the paint.
2. Stenciling: Participants will learn to paint with wet pulp using stencils, creating intricate designs and patterns.

• Deckle and mold
• Foam
• Buckets
• Squeeze bottles
• Plastic spoon
• Plastic bowls (small)

About the instructor:

Yasaman Moussavi is an artist and educator. She holds an MFA and a BFA and is currently pursuing a PhD in Art Education at the University of British Columbia. Her work has been shown in many national and international exhibitions. www.yasamanmoussavi.com

In this workshop we will use a considerable amount of water, we suggest considering that.
