Advanced Field Trip: Whales of the Atlantic

Join Terranaut Club for a whale research field trip at Dalhousie University! This advanced program will explore the world of cetacean biology and research alongside marine experts, learning about whales of the Atlantic Ocean and their role in marine ecosystems, how their vocalizations are recorded and studied (acoustics), how photos are used for species identification, what itโs like to be a marine biologist, and more!

- Pay-what-you-can, costs $50/participant
- Maximum 12 participants
- For girls and under-represented genders (โgirls+โ)
- Ages 14-18
Activities Include:
- Engaging in discussions about whales and their role in marine ecosystems
- Learning about acoustics (how we record and study their vocalizations) and how it can be applied to whale research and conservation with the DFO Whale Team
- Participating in a photo ID workshop using real data collected by the Hal Whitehead lab at Dalhousie University
- Getting hands-on with intertidal creatures and local marine life at Dalhousieโs touch tanks
- Learning about careers in STEM and what itโs like to study wildlife conservation and/or marine biology at college and university
Other Information:
Participants should come prepared with multiple snacks and a lunch, water bottle, comfortable shoes, a backpack, and weather appropriate clothes.
Unlike our summer programs, there is no nomination process for workshops. Registration is first come, first served, and can be completed on this page. Though the cost of this program is $50 per participant, it is pay-what-you-can and your donation must be made upon registering.
